Just west of the Heights and east-northeast of the Lazybrook/Timbergrove Manor area, bordered by T C Jester Blvd, Loop 610, Durham and W 14th St, this one-time sleepy little Inner Loop neighborhood of Shady Acres has become a vibrant, energetic and fun place to live, booming with new construction homes and townhomes among original bungalows and cottages. Shady Acres is also home to first rate restaurants and entertainment venues, great shopping and more.
As its name implies “Shady Acres” has been known for its abundance of large shade trees. In fact, early photos of the area, circa the 1920s before homes were built, show the area to be heavily wooded. Now, residents can enjoy hike and bike trails along T C Jester’s parkway, the woods and park area of Little Thicket at its western edge, and the playground and tennis courts at Wright-Bembry Park in the 800 block of W. 23rd.
Settled by German farmers in the late 1800s, in the early 1920s,100 acres were sold to the Shadyacres Investment Company from the Henry Reinermann Original Grant in Harris County. The acreage was sold in lots of one acre or smaller, with ads offering “oversized lots” and “an acre for the same price as a city lot.” They boasted that the land was “close in” and that a gas line was being laid.
The neighborhood’s very active Shady Acres Civic Club (SACC) was founded in 1935, whose main concerns, at that time, were getting bus service, dealing with oil drillers, and requesting that city postal services be extended to their neighborhood. Today, they are focused on keeping their neighborhood of approximately 460+ homes safe and beautiful, staying in constant contact with the super-neighborhood council, local businesses, police and fire departments, and other service groups to make sure our community is always informed about what’s going on in our community, as well as in the entire city of Houston.
